Hughesnet’s Fusion plan use a hybrid connection that makes use of terrestrial wireless networks to give you a low-latency connection when you need it. This makes it possible to use video chat, online games, and other activities that are nearly impossible over a normal satellite connection. Meanwhile, the bulk of your data, which doesn’t need a responsive connection, still travels to orbit and back.

Hughesnet Voice is voice-over-IP (VoIP) or internet telephony service that can be added on to your Hughesnet plan. Unlike analog telephone systems, VoIP doesn’t use the public telephone network, but instead records your voice digitally and sends it over the internet. This means that making calls over Hughesnet Voice uses your monthly data and also that if your internet goes out, your telephone is out, too.

Hughesnet is one of the two traditional satellite-based broadband internet services in the US. It uses its satellites to provide internet service to the entire US, including remote areas with no other communication infrastructure. Hughesnet has a simple pricing structure, making it easy to choose a plan.
Hughesnet provides good internet if you live in a rural area and don’t have access to wired internet like cable or fiber. Since Hughesnet provides satellite internet, you’ll pay a higher price for slower speeds and less data than you would for fiber or cable internet, so it is not the recommended option if you live in a densely populated area with other internet options. However, if you live in a sparsely populated rural area and you can only get satellite internet, Hughesnet is a solid choice, offering low-priced plans than other satellite competitors like Viasat.
Hughesnet is a well-established name in satellite internet, but a lot of new providers are now entering the market. Low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations like Starlink have the potential to provide stiff competition, but for now, Hughesnet is a good choice for rural internet customers who want straightforward pricing and the most affordable options.
HughesNet plans have a download speed range of 50-100Mbps, which meets the FCC definition of broadband internet. This is enough download speed to perform most online activities, but other limitations like high latency can cause other issues. Latency can cause problems for video chat and online games, while low data caps make it impractical to stream video like Netflix or YouTube.
Yes, you can get Hughesnet in urban areas; however, with other internet options like fiber, cable, and DSL that are usually going to be faster and cheaper, satellite loses much of its appeal. We generally suggest choosing satellite internet only when there are no other options available.
