Google Fiber’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Google Fiber’s gigabit speeds are more than enough for the average household and can even accommodate the most demanding internet users with ease. Very few people need more speed than they can get from Google Fiber’s 1 Gig plan, but for those who want speed for speed’s sake, they also offer a blindingly fast 2 Gig plan in many areas.

Google Fiber’s data caps

Google Fiber has no data caps, and we think that’s great. You can go through a lot of data really fast on a gigabit connection, so having unlimited data is a must.

Our favorite plan: Google Fiber 1000. It’s fast. It’s reliable. And it’s less expensive than many other gigabit plans out there.

Google Fiber has very simple plans and pricing, with no hidden fees, sneaky contracts, or other unexpected surprises. There aren’t any discounts or promotions to take advantage of, but the basic plan is still an incredible value.

New Google Fiber customers get free equipment and free professional installation. That’s hard to beat.

Google Fiber internet installation, equipment, and contracts

Google Fiber doesn’t tie down customers with long-term contracts or hit them with hefty upfront costs. This makes Google Fiber the easiest provider you could possibly switch to.

Google Fiber installation and equipment

Every Google Fiber customer gets free professional installation and equipment. Everything you need to connect to the internet, including a wireless router, comes included at no extra cost. Google Fiber uses cutting edge Wi-Fi 6 equipment, which is perfect for smart homes. That’s another advantage over other providers—many ISPs provide older or refurbished equipment that can quickly become outdated or unreliable.

Google Fiber internet contracts

Google Fiber has no long-term contracts. You pay your bill at the start of every month and can cancel your service at any time with no penalties.

Google Fiber was by far the highest-rated ISP in our annual customer satisfaction survey. It ranked higher in every category, both when compared to other smaller regional providers, as well as when compared to the national providers with much larger coverage areas. People who sign up for Google Fiber rarely regret their decision.

How Google Fiber compares to the competition

ProviderPlan price rangeSpeeds (range)User rating*Order online
Google Fiber$70.00–$150.00/mo.1,000–8,000 MbpsN/A
AT&T$55.00–$250.00/mo.25–5,000 Mbps3.8/5
CenturyLink$30.00–$75.00/mo.§100–940 Mbps3.5/5

Google Fiber is competitive with their 1 gigabit fiber plan—most of the top fiber providers offer a 1 gig plan at a similar price. The biggest advantage the competition has, other than availability, is variety. Many providers offer both slower and faster plans than Google Fiber, which only offers 1 gigabit options and above.

Although other providers might have more options, few can match the simplicity and transparency of Google Fiber in pricing. You might be able to save a few bucks a month with a slower fiber plan from another provider, but fees, contracts, and other inconveniences can negate those benefits. Unless you’ve crunched the numbers and found another plan that perfectly meets your speed and budget needs, Google Fiber is usually a better value.

Google Fiber FAQ

What are the best routers for Google Fiber internet?

Google Fiber comes with free, high-quality equipment, so you don’t need any additional equipment to get your home network running. If you do want to upgrade, you’re going to want to look at the fastest gigabit routers out there, because most routers aren’t going to be as good as the one you get from Google Fiber.

Can I get gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi?

Many modern Wi-Fi routers have a maximum throughput of several gigabits per second; however, this is based on the total data the router can send to all devices on your network. To get the fastest and most reliable speeds to a single device, it’s often better to connect that device directly to your router with an ethernet cable.

Methodology

Our HighSpeedInternet.com editorial team bases our analyses on customer input from our annual customer satisfaction survey, results from our speed test tool, and proprietary internet provider data on speeds and pricing. To strengthen our research, we look closely at provider contracts to get hard-to-find information on price hikes, data caps, and extra fees, and we keep tabs on the latest news reports and online reviews. When applicable, we also rely on our personal experiences testing these services.
