Our Xfinity internet review

Xfinity is one of the fastest internet providers with nationwide coverage. Its internet plans offer a ton of value with fast speeds at competitive rates. Xfinity is primarily a cable ISP (internet service provider), meaning it uses coaxial cable to deliver internet service. Cable internet is fast and reliable, second only to fiber internet.

Some Xfinity competitors offer fiber internet, and we do recommend fiber over cable internet if you can get it. But fiber internet isn’t widely available yet. Technically, Xfinity also offers fiber internet, but its single fiber plan is prohibitively expensive and unavailable in most areas.

 Pros

  • Great value
  • Variety of plans

Xfinity’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Xfinity has great plan variety when it comes to speed and your budget. Keep in mind, Xfinity’s pricing varies by region.

The Fast internet plan provides 400Mbps of internet speed for an affordable $55.00 per month—that’s enough speed for the average household at a decent value.

Larger families and heavy internet users should consider the Superfast internet plan. At $65 per month, it provides 800Mbps of internet speed, which is enough internet speed for just about anyone.

Those with tighter budgets can take a closer look at the Connect More plan, it’s $25 less per month than the Fast plan but provides half of the speed (200Mbps).

Xfinity’s high-tier Gigabit and Gigabit Extra plans only make sense if you have the most extreme bandwidth needs. Think households with six or more people or those who frequently need to download huge amounts of data.

Xfinity data caps

Xfinity internet plans have a 1.2 TB data cap—plenty of data for the average customer. But if you do go over, Xinifty gives customers a pass for the first data overage. After that, you get hit with a $10 fee for every 50 GB over your cap, up to a maximum of $100 a month.

There are two ways you can get unlimited data with an Xfinity internet plan:

  1. You can sign up for xFi Complete for an extra $25 per month. It also includes an upgraded Xfinity gateway (modem/router) rental.
  2. You can add unlimited data to any Xfinity internet plan for $30 per month.

Our favorite plan: Xfinity’s Fast internet plan provides 400Mbps for $55 per month, and is one of the better cable internet deals offered anywhere in the market. For some perspective, Spectrum, another huge cable ISP, sells customers 300Mbps for $50 per month. The country’s next largest cable ISP, Cox, charges $59.99 for just 250Mbps.

Xfinity’s Fast internet plan is a good deal matched only by a few fiber ISPs.

Xfinity’s installation fee is generally $100, though that is subject to change based on region. The equipment rental and other fees are standard for cable internet providers.

Xfinity internet installation, equipment, and contracts

At $100, Xfinity’s install fee is something you want to try to avoid by opting to self-install. Xfinity’s equipment is pretty good, and it has some attractive offers and features that make renting equipment tempting. Regarding contracts, there isn’t much flexibility—most plans require at least a 12-month contract.

Xfinity installation

For $100, Xfinity sends a technician to your residence to connect you to its network and set up your equipment. If your residence already has an active Xfinity internet connection, you can just self-install for free.

Self-installation with Xfinity is easy. All you need to do is connect your equipment to power and connect an active coaxial cable to the back of the modem. From there, the Xfinity app walks you through the rest of the process.

Xfinity equipment

Xfinity recently came out with its new XB-7 internet gateway, a modem/router combo that uses the best cable internet standard, DOCSIS 3.1. The XB-7 has four Ethernet ports and integrates well with the Xfinity App’s control and troubleshooting features.

Xfinity bundles its equipment rental and unlimited data feature with the xFi complete add-on, which costs $25 a month on top of your regular rates.

Xfinity internet contracts

Xfinity plan contracts vary by region and plan, but getting Xfinity internet typically requires at least a 12-month contract. If you terminate your plan early, prepare to pay early termination fees of $10 for every month remaining on your contract.

Xfinity internet plans also have price hikes after the promotional period ends. The amount of varies between regions and plans.

How Xfinity compares to the competition

ProviderPlan price rangeSpeeds (range)User rating*Order online
Xfinity$20.00–$120.0075–2,000Mbps3.7/5*View Plans
AT&T$55.00–$250.00/mo.25–5,000Mbps3.7/5*
CenturyLink$30.00–$75.00/mo.100–940Mbps3.6/5*
Verizon$49.99–$94.99/mo.300–2,300Mbps3.9/5*

Xfinity’s main competitors are AT&T, CenturyLink, and Verizon. We recommend choosing one of these ISPs over Xfinity only if you can get a fiber internet plan. Fiber is the best type of internet; it’s both faster and more reliable than cable internet. Unfortunately, fiber isn’t available in a lot of areas.

Competitors also usually offer DSL internet, which is drastically inferior to Xfinity’s cable internet—mainly because it’s a lot slower. DSL plans typically have poor value as well, offering less speed for the money.

Is Xfinity right for you?

Xfinity is an excellent choice if you don’t have access to fiber internet. Even if you can get fiber, it’s still worth considering Xfinity internet plans because of their great value. Xfinity also has a good variety of internet plans to choose from, making it easy to find something that matches your needs and budget.

Xfinity may not be the best fit if you’re looking for a flexible contract, as it doesn’t have month-to-month options for its standard internet plans. Xfinity does offer a prepaid internet plan, but it’s slow, pricey, and requires a modem purchase—not a great deal.

If you’re looking for fast internet speeds at a good price, Xfinity is hard to beat. Overall, Xfinity is a great ISP that gives a lot for your money: high speeds, great features, and good equipment.
